Open Family Tree Maker with Rosetta

Rosetta enables a Mac with Apple silicon to run Intel-based apps. Support for Rosetta will end in a future version of macOS, that’s why we are now providing an updated version of Family Book Creator which runs natively on Apple silicon (see details at Apple: "Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon").

Starting with Build 2631 Family Book Creator 2024 for macOS is now a Universal Application, running natively on both Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3 etc.) and Intel processors. Currently, FTM 2019 and FTM 2024 do not support plugins designed to run on Apple silicon. To use this version of FBC with the current versions of FTM, you need to open Family Tree Maker with Rosetta, as described below.

To allow a universal plugin to work correctly with current Family Tree Maker versions on Apple silicon, FTM itself needs to be set to run under Rosetta. This makes FTM launch the plugin in a way that's compatible.

Instructions to enable Rosetta for FTM:

Make sure Family Tree Maker is not running. If FTM is running quit Family Tree Maker (using command+Q) or click the application's name in the menu bar at the top-left of the screen and select 'Quit Family Tree Maker' as shown in the following screenshot

Open the Applications folder in Finder

Right-click Family Tree Maker 2024 (or Family Tree Maker 2019) and select 'Get Info'.

In the info panel, check "Open using Rosetta".

Close the info panel, then launch Family Tree Maker and run the plugin.

Once set, the plugin will launch under Rosetta.

    

Note: After you have installed a Family Tree Maker version which supports plugins designed to run on Apple silicon you need to clear the "Open using Rosetta" option again in order to run FTM and FBC natively on Apple silicon.
